Alex Ovechkin Reaches 50 NHL Goals

Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals reached 50 NHL goals this season on March 31, 2015. He’s the 6th player in NHL history to reach six 50-goal seasons. Washington faced off against the Carolina Hurricanes and doubled up on them, winning by a score of 4 – 2. Ovechkin is 29 years old and was drafted 1st overall by the Capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. The Russian hockey player is a left winger and is playing in his 10th NHL hockey season, all with Washington. In 76 games this season, Ovechkin has racked up 50 goals and 27 assists for 77 points, and also has 54 penalty minutes. His 77 points is good for second in league scoring.

Ovechkin scored 52 goals as a rookie in the 2005-2006 season and has been a consistent scoring threat every year since then. He has hit the 30-goal plateau for 10 straight seasons, joining a group of only 4 other players to do it. His career high is 65 goals, which he hit in the 2007-2008 NHL season, and he also reached a career high for points that season as well with 112 points. At about the halfway point of the season, I wrote an article saying that he was a dark horse to reach 50 goals, because he was on a pace to hit about 42 goals at that point, and mentioned that I wouldn`t count him out of the race. At this point, it looks like he will be the only one hitting 50 goals this season. In 755 career NHL games, Ovechkin has amassed 472 goals, 419 assists, 891 points, and 510 penalty minutes.
