Scoring 50 goals in one season has always been a big accomplishment for hockey players in the NHL. NHL hockey is constantly evolving, as players seem to get better and more prepared every season. The goalies are keeping up with that trend as well, making it harder to score than ever before. With better training, development and bigger players, scoring goals is an integral part of the game.
Reaching the 50 goal plateau in one NHL season is a huge accomplishment, which has only been reached by a small group of players. In the last 10 full seasons, not including lockouts, the 50 goal plateau has only been reached 19 times. Of these 19 times, four players have done it more than once, meaning that only 12 players have scored 50 or more goals in the NHL in the past 10 seasons.
Tyler Seguin of the Dallas Stars, Rick Nash of the New York Rangers, and Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning are all currently tied at 26 goals. All three are on pace for 45 or more goals, and all have good shot at reaching 50 goals.
Nash is on pace for 52 goals, so statistically, he has the best chance at reaching the 50 goal milestone. Nash has a career high 41 goals, and reached 40 goals on one other occasion, but the last time he hit 40 goals was back in 2008-2009, when he was still with the Blue Jackets. He’s currently on pace to set career highs for goals and points.
Seguin is on pace for 50 goals, and definitely has a great chance at hitting the milestone. He is on pace to destroy his career high of 37 goals, as well as set a career high for points. He is doing very well, especially considering that Dallas is currently sitting in 21st place and out of the playoffs.
Stamkos is on pace for 46 goals, but he has reached the 50 goal plateau twice before. He needs to pick up the pace a little bit to reach 50 goals, but is highly capable of doing so. All he needs is a hat trick or two and he will be right on pace. Stamkos has a career high of 60 goals, and might have hit 50 goals again the past 2 seasons, as he was on pace for 50 or more in both seasons. A lockout shortened the 2012 -2013 season, and last year he sustained a broken leg, and was forced to miss 45 games. I wouldn’t bet against Stamkos.
It’s worth mentioning that there are a couple of players on pace for 40 plus goals this NHL season, so they have a chance as well, but they need to have a very good second half of the season, to have any chance at hitting 50 goals this season. Vladimir Tarasenko of the St Louis Blues is a bit of a long shot, with 24 goals, which puts him on pace for about 44 goals. He is having a break out season this year and has already set career highs for goals, assists, and points, and should be able to at least double his outputs for all three.
Last but definitely not least, we have Alex Ovechkin…
Ovechkin has 22 goals and is on pace for 42 goals this season, but has already reached the 50 goal plateau 5 times in his first 9 seasons. His career high of 65 goals is the highest amongst all these exciting NHL hockey players. He needs to score 38 goals in the last 39 games of the season, which seems like a lot. But again, I wouldn’t count Ovi out.
You can choose 1 player or all 5.
The table below shows which players have reached the 50 goal plateau since the 2002 – 2003 NHL season:
Will any of them reach 50?
